The City of Leavenworth will be conducting a prescribed controlled burn on the City owned land adjacent to the City owned Mountain View Cemetery. The controlled burn is permitted under the Department of Ecology and will be conducted with the oversight of Chelan County Fire District #3. The material to be burned is green waste collected by the City as required by the Department of Agriculture because of the Apple Maggot Quarantine restrictions.
The City will be monitoring the weather and onsite ground conditions to determine the optimal time window for the prescribed burn. Once ideal weather conditions are achieved and a burn date has been selected, a News Release will be issued to notify the public a minimum of 24 hours before ignition.
During the implementation of the burn, access will be temporarily restricted in areas near the burn site. Roadways may be temporarily blocked to ensure the safety of cemetery patrons. City staff in conjunction with Chelan County Fire District #3 will be monitoring the site 24 hours per day.
This work is being done in accordance with the WA State Department of Ecology (DOE); all policies and guidelines have been met by the City.
A Burn Permit has been obtained through the DOE, which will aid in the removal of brush and yard waste debris that has been collected throughout City and hauled to the site shown in the map (above) and stockpiled until such time as a disposal method could be determined. Currently the City estimates the need to request up to 4 burns per year in order to adequately eliminate the green waste collected on an annual basis due to the regulations set for by the Department of Agriculture in regard to the Apple Maggot Quarantine.
